Purpose and Vision
Our Purpose
Our Catholic K–12 College exists as a living expression of the Church’s mission in Western Australia, to proclaim the Gospel, nurture faith, and form young people who live with purpose, compassion, and integrity. Guided by the Bishops Mandate for Catholic Education, we are entrusted with the sacred responsibility of educating students in a way that reflects the presence of Christ in every aspect of life.
We exist to serve students from diverse backgrounds and faith journeys, forming young people who are not only academically capable but also morally grounded, spiritually awakened, and socially responsible. Our purpose is to create a vibrant learning environment where faith and reason walk hand in hand, and where every student is invited into a deeper relationship with God, self, and others.
We proudly continue the mission of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy, whose legacy of compassion, justice, and service remains woven into the fabric of our College. Inspired by Catherine’s vision to uplift the poor, educate the vulnerable, and reveal God’s mercy to all, we strive to be a place where every student is known, valued, and empowered to flourish.
Our purpose is expressed through:
- Faith-filled education: Placing Christ at the heart of all learning, prayer, and relationships.
- Inclusive community: Welcoming students from all backgrounds and supporting their diverse needs with dignity and care.
- Academic excellence and personal growth: Encouraging curiosity, creativity, and resilience in pursuit of lifelong learning.
- Service and justice: Forming students to be compassionate leaders who stand in solidarity with the marginalised and contribute to the common good.
In partnership with families and parishes, our College is a beacon of hope in the modern world, where the Mercy tradition lives on, and every child is invited to live “life to the full” (John 10:10).
The Mercy Vision
Mercy College is a community whose members work in partnership towards the education of young people. With Christ as our guiding light and in the spirit of Catherine McAuley, we seek to recognise, appreciate and develop the gifts of all in a spirit of collaboration, love and service.
The College is committed to creating a climate where students are encouraged to be self-aware, tolerant, compassionate towards others and independent in thought and action, by contributing to the world in which they live.
“The Glory of God is a person fully alive.”
Our Crest
Our Crest is a graphical expression of our Purpose and Vision.
Lamb of Sacrifice – Symbolises Jesus Christ. In Christian history the Hebrews offered lamb on an altar to receive God’s blessing.
Flag of Triumph – Represents the victory of truth. In our lives, truth is always the stronger force.
Book of Scripture – The lamb sits on the open bible and this represents God’s word for us and offers to us greater knowledge of God.
Mercy Cross – The cross represents Jesus Christ and reminds us of the reason for his life, death and resurrection. The idea of the Mercy cross came from Catherine McAuley who wanted the Mercy Sisters to give their lives in service to other people.
Misericordia – Misericordia means Mercy. This is the openness of God to help us. When we search for the Mercy of God, then we are able to reach out to others with forgiveness and compassion. Catherine McAuley wanted ‘Mercy’ to be the main motto of Sisters of Mercy.
Vertical Bands – Originally the Mercy Sisters’ Shield had several bars – four red and three green that were adopted from a medieval Order of Mercy. The Mercy College crest has five bands of gold with four white and sometimes you see blue on these bars as well. The five bands stand for – Justice, Compassion, Service and Excellence, Dignity.
Our Motto
The College’s motto, Love in Action, is based on the personal understanding of what ‘Mercy’ meant to Sister Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy. It also reflects how we as a College community act in faith and exhibit our Christian values by showing kindness and tolerance, as well as love and compassion toward all members of the community.
